The office space in Amstelveen City is in a low-rise, modernist building set among trees and surrounded on two sides by water. This is an attractive, relaxed setting in which to work, yet it is at the heart of the Dutch business community, with some of the Netherlands' largest and best-known names based locally. High profile businesses include consultancy firms and transport companies, and there has been an influx of international technology and electronics manufacturers, taking advantage of both the strategic location and the well-educated local workforce to establish European sales and distribution hubs. Amstelveen has the most diverse international community in the Netherlands - 11 per cent of residents have ex-pat status and a range of cultural and economic services have sprung up, tailored to suit the particular needs of locally-based Japanese, British, American, German and Indian workers. The cosmopolitan flavour of Amstelveen is being perpetuated by the International School of Amsterdam, which has a centre here.
